Dog Sledding in Greenland
Jan/Feb 1998 Greenland.
The most extraordinary place that I've ever been to. Certainly the coldest .
All trivia about Greenland is unusual to say the least.
A country the size of Australia but with a popluation of only 60,000. The longest road is six kilometres long and there is only one set of traffic lights in the whole country.
When Sailor performed their concerts in this country they discovered that they were the first international band to tour there. Helicopter was the only means of transport to the remote villages and many concerts were cancelled when we were stranded in the capital Nuuk because of blizzards.
Dog sledding is very exciting and the dog teams are magnificent. I really wanted to stroke them but was warned that they'd probably take my hand off.
This picture I love because it was taken with a cheap disposable camera and developed really well. Using an expensive camera in this climate could freeze up the mechanism and destroy it. Ask our roadie Graham Naylor. I am the strange apparition on the right and am wearing oil skins over several layers of clothing. The man on the left owns the sled and the dogs .The Innuit are wonderful people and if I could have done I'd have brought a husky home . But unfortuneatly they are bred only for that climate and would not survive in any temperature that isn't subzero.
