First Time On The Box

Colour Me Pop : BBC2 1968

Simon Byrne (pictured on drums) provided this one.
A wonderful piece of memorabilia for me , as it's our first time on the telly.
I think Simon's mum or dad took the photo ( no domestic video recorders then).

It was an early colour transmission hence the name of the programme and we (The Toast) were totally terrified as it was a live performance to boot.
I'm wearing a purple velvet top which concerned the producer on the night. Dramatic colours were considered a technological challenge! The shirt was made for me by my girlfriend Jo Conlon. I remember watching the programme with her in her pad in Earl's Court and she only mentioned the purple top and how good it looked, so I don't think she was too enamoured with the band.

There is no copy of this performance in the BBC archives.
They ruthlessly wiped the series , leaving only the Jethro Tull concert for posterity.

Other Trivia :
Opening number was Magical Mystery Tour and closing number Sunshine Of Your Love.
Somewhere in the set Simon sang a version of Blackbird from the Beatles White Album.
Simon has a wonderful voice and I've used his vocal skills on many of my theatre projects.

For Musos :
Simon's Drumkit is a woodframed Slingerland (great tone)
My guitar is a 1968 sunburst Fender Telecaster (wish I'd kept hold of it.)
